What are Peptides: A Complete Guide!

Peptides are present in every single cell and tissue in our bodies. And play a key role in all sorts of biological processes. It is highly imperative to maintain certain magnitude of concentration and activity levels of peptides in order to stay healthy and achieve homeostasis.

Like we bring together a combination of letters to form words, similarly, 20 naturally occurring amino acids unite together to form a huge variety of molecules. So, when a molecule consists of 2-50 amino acids, it forms a peptide in return. Whereas, if the chain of amino acids is larger i.e. >50 then they are referred to as proteins.

Some of the functions which a peptide carries out are described below. Have a look!

PROTIENS

Peptides are molecules called proteins in a lay man’s language. When amino acids are chemically linked together, they tend to form peptides. They differ in size from two amino acids (dipeptides) to thousands of amino acids (polypeptides). The type and sequence of an amino acid, determines the function which a peptide has to carry out. Peptides are designated to perform several functions in our body.

PEPTIDE TRANSPORTERS

The formation or construction of a cell is such that there is protective membrane that prevents substances from getting into a cell easily. Some peptides selectively allow certain substances to pass through the cell membrane.  For example, it is necessary for the glucose transporters to travel from the blood into a muscle or a designated cell to be consumed as energy. Similarly, peptide transporters help cellular waste products to be carried out of the cell.

HORMONES

Hormones are typically used as messengers for transmitting message from one tissue to another distant tissue. They can be classifies into two very common classes as peptides and steroid hormones. Peptide hormones are the ones used in blood glucose regulation like insulin and glucagon and also the ones that keep the appetite functional like ghrelin and leptin.

STRUCTURE

Peptides are also called the structural elements of human body. Such as peptides actin and myosin are integral structural components of a muscle. It has been found that peptides contribute towards the shape of the bone as well as giving strength to the body. Where bone and muscle formulate the structure of the body, but also are an imperative factor in the movement of the body and endow with protection to internal organs.

ENZYMES

Enzymes are said to work as biological catalysts that aid in speedy metabolic reactions. According to several researches conducted, enzymes are peptides. There is a huge number of enzymes designated to speed up the reactions in the processes taking place in human bodies. These processes may include digestion of food and production of energy.

BODYBUILDING

Over the recent years, it has been widely observed that intake of peptides has become very common and popular among the bodybuilders and people coveting muscular bodies. This trend has increased due to complication, obstructions and harmful effects of taking anabolic asteroids. Consumption of peptide in bodybuilding is essential because it improves the growth hormone production.  Human body uses peptides to produce increased amount of HGH which in return makes it easier to achieve bigger muscle mass and greater strength.
